I write furiously whenever I get my inspirations, the rest of the time I try and organise my thoughts/semi-coherent notes/timelines. I also do sketches of charcters to help me flesh them out and keep track of who is who.
If you happen to be writing a story based on earth a tool I have found invalueable is Skyview Cafe http://www.skyviewcafe.com/ it allows you to look up any date and see the sky from any location on earth, also has calandar-setting with all the moon-phases, solstices etc. Need to know if your charcter is sneaking around in the dark of night- how dark was it? Not if there was a full moon, that night. People tend to be weirder on the full moon, coincedents or any kind of lycanthrope story this is a must have!
Having some sort of timeline structure helps me slog it through in the parts where the Muse has ditched me to hang out with cooler kids.

There was a Twitter discussion about what sort of notebook everyone uses just as I landed here. Totally cracked me up.

Me, I store it all in my brain and figure that if it’s meant to be remembered, it will be. And I revisit and reshape it as much as I can, too.

The thing is about it being 99% perspiration is that you need a hell of a lot of showers. So, either way, things should get written.
