AND ONE MONTH LATER…

Honestly, I have good intentions regarding blogging but something is eating my weeks when I’m not looking. I can’t believe this is the middle of August already. This summer has FLOWN.

July was as insane as a Juggalo. And believe me, I know. This particular band and their groupies used to stay at a hotel where I was employed. Boy, do I have stories. But I digress.

Suffice to say July was stuffed to the gills, and the first week of August was no different. Now, I have a small window until the madness of September, but first I will be visiting the lovely community of PEI to spend quality time with a dear friend, sit on a panel of The New Face of Publishing sponsored by Fierce Ink Press, and teach a class on editing. I’M SO EXCITED! And nervous, I’ll admit it. But mostly EXCITED!

Yay Canada!

YAY, CANADA!

I’m going international, baby. Heh.

I did take some time to update the Editing Work page for new releases, and I’m pumped about the new ones to come. Kris Austen Radcliffe is getting ready to launch FLUX OF SKIN on September 3, and Jordan L. Hawk will also be releasing the next in the SPECTR series, EATER OF LIVES on the same day. SQUEE!

In the meantime, I am feverishly editing the amazing collection of stories for theAllegories of the Tarot anthology to be released October 31. I am just blown away by the talent of these writers. Blown. Away. Badass Marketing has been engaged for the launch, and boy, do we have some great things planned. I COULD PEE!

Can you even stand it?

CAN YOU EVEN STAND IT?

I can’t WAIT.

And that’s what I’ve been up to. What kind of trouble are you stirring up? :D

Kris Austen Radcliffe — The Emperor

Today we’re going to meet the writer behind the next card in the deck of the Allegories of the Tarot project, Kris Austen Radcliffe. So far you’ve been introduced to The FoolThe Magician, and The High Priestess.

Kris is not only a talented writer, she’s an amazing photographer and the genius behind the photographs of the Tarot cards featured here. She is focused, driven, and I love working with her on her projects. Kris’s stories are quite unusual and unlike any I’ve read, which is what drew me into her world of Fates, Fire, Shifters, and Dragons. What really sealed the deal for me is how much she loves Dragonriders of Pern. My own original copy of that particular trilogy I still own, held together with packing tape. I’ve had it for almost thirty years. When I found out she took down a pack of hungry wolves with hers, I knew this relationship was a match made in heaven.

Her photos are STUNNING.

Kris’s card is The Emperor, and it is quite fitting if you know Kris and her work.

From Wikipedia: “The Emperor symbolizes the desire to rule over one’s surroundings, and its appearance in a reading often suggests that the subject needs to accept that some things may not be controllable, and others may not benefit from being controlled.

“As with all Tarot cards, multiple meanings are possible. Where the Empress is the Feminine principle, the Emperor is the Masculine. Most individuals will relate to this card in the same way they relate to their own father. The Emperor is Key Four of the Major Arcana. Fours are stable numbers; four walls, four seasons, four corners. It takes a massive amount of energy, comparatively, to move them. The strength of The Emperor is the stability he brings. The weakness is the risk of stagnation.”

What intrigues you about this particular Tarot card? Emperor is the ultimate Alpha Male. He’s a jerk, often a total bastard, but he gets it done. No one messes with the Emperor.

Why did you decide to get roped into this project? I used to read tarot for a talent agency. And Annetta asked. I can’t say no to Annetta. She’s the Emperor.

Have you ever had dealings with the Tarot before? Like I said, I used to read for a talent agency. I also ran a special on my Facebook page last Halloween where I did readings for people. I’m quite good at it.

What other projects do you have planned? “Conpulsio”, a new Fate ~ Fire ~ Shifter ~ Dragon novella, is slated for release at the end of April. “Flux of Skin”, the second book in the FFSD series, is on track for a September release.

I’ll also have fine art photographs available for purchase by the end of May, including several of my Irish landscapes—and a tarot print or two.

She means business.

Bio: As a child, Kris took down a pack of hungry wolves with only a hardcover copy of The Dragonriders of Pern and a sharpened toothbrush. That fateful day set her on a path traversing many storytelling worlds—dabbles in film and comic books, time as a talent agent and a textbook photo coordinator, and a foray into nonfiction. After co-authoring Mind Shapes: Understanding the Differences in Thinking and Communication, Kris returned to academia. But she craved narrative and a richly-textured world of Fates, Shifters, and Dragons—and unexpected, true love.

Kris lives in Minnesota with her husband, two daughters, Handsome Cat, and an entire menagerie of suburban wildlife bent on destroying her house. That battered-but-true copy of “Dragonriders”? She found it yesterday. It’s time to pay a visit to the woodpeckers.

All Of This And A Bag Of Chips

Well, chips are off the menu and have been for quite a while. Still, January was all that and a figurative bag of chips.

So incredibly evil, these delicious tidbits of evil evilness. *sigh*

I pumped out a lot of work in January, and February is filling up. I’m happy about that–January was all about getting ‘scripts out the door I’d been working on for a while. I’m really excited to see some fabulous fiction hit the ground running, so keep an eye on my Twitter and Facebook for shout-outs as they release. I also add them to my sidebar, although the list is getting so long I will most likely try to put together a page just for the editing work.

Being a content editor puts me in an awkward position. Obviously, any review I do could be considered biased, and after thinking long and hard about it, I decided it was a conflict of interest for me to formally review any of my clients. Amazon’s TOS makes it very clear they feel the same way. Especially in the wake of the “sock puppet” kerfluffle, which is nothing new to publishing if you know anything about publishing at all. Evidently Amazon feels writers cannot be readers in certain cases, which sucks. Because of course writers are readers. Or they should be.

It’s a sticky wicket. Let’s just say I don’t take on work I don’t like. I can’t. If I don’t like the story, I won’t be able to do my job. So while I may not formally review books my clients produce, you can bet I love each and every one of them, and I support my peeps with a shout-out on their release day and as time allows. I’ll leave it up to you, the reader, to read and review.

Here’s a list of books ready to go or have been recently released:

Jordan L. Hawk will be releasing Hunter of Demons on February 5th. I am so in love with this series!

Ashes and Ice will also be out February 4th by debut author Rochelle Maya Callen. Very exciting!

Sassafras made his debut, by the amazing Patti Larsen, and I have it on good authority Dark Promise will be available in the next week or so.

Just now on the shelves you can find Games of Fate and Prolusio, a fabulous new series from Kris Austen Radcliffe.

There’s a lot more where that came from. Lovely, exciting, haunting, fascinating, tantalizing fiction. WHOOHOOO! And congratulations to all on your releases 🙂

All that and here’s my bag of chips–if you haven’t heard about Coursera, hie your heinie over there POST HASTE. You will find college courses offered FOR FREE from some of the most prestigious universities in the world. That’s right, you heard me. IN THE WORLD. These are serious, hardcore college courses with all the hard work you’d expect from a quality college course, but for free? Seriously? And from the comfort of your own home? HELL TO THE YEAH.

Have you heard of the University of Michigan? John Hopkins University? Stanford? University of Edinburgh? Princeton University? How about Duke?

It’s an amazing opportunity, and I was like a kid in a candy store. I wanted to sign up for about 32 different courses, but of course that’s not possible because there are still only 24 hours in the day. (SOMEONE NEEDS TO FIX THAT.)

I’m only taking one at a time, like a sensible person, but I had to stop looking at everything being offered because it’s as addicting as crack. And we all know crack is whack.

So, hello, February! I can see we have a lot to do! BRING IT ON.

Hope your January was productive. Give a shout and let me know what you’ve been up to. Because I’m nosy that way. Heh.

Happy Friday!
